The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) hosted a webinar on 24 October 2025 with Professor Hugo ka Canham, joint recipient of the 2025 ASSAf Humanities Book Prize for Riotous Deathscapes. In this groundbreaking work, Prof Canham introduces Mpondo theory, a framework grounded in indigenous and Black ways of knowing that explores the amaMpondo people’s capacity to endure state abandonment in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The book weaves oral histories, historical narratives, and radical Black intellectual traditions to challenge Western paradigms and reimagine land, life, and resistance. The webinar formed part of a lecture series that continues the celebration of the Humanities Book Prize, providing recipients a platform to share the journeys behind their works and reflect on their broader societal impact.
