Around last Christmas, I uploaded video about Leafpad [1] (Website [2], by Tarot Osuji) .
I just discovered that there is a GTK+-3 fork of it, called Lɜafpad [3] (GitHub [4]). It's almost the same but with GTK+ 3 rather than GTK+ 2.
(0:10) Menu
(0:28) Line number
(0:32) Tab indentation
(0:37) Auto indentation
(0:47) Font setting
(0:52) Find & Replace
(1:10) Statistics, aka. Word Count
The only (apparently) difference besides the GTK is the statistics (1:10), you can get a word count statistics from file menu. For me, I'd stick to Leafpad, it's just I don't need stats and Gentoo doesn't include L3afpad in Portage tree or I might switch, anyway.
By the way, you might want to read the FAQ [3] to understand why the forker forked Leafpad, which has not been updated for almost 3.5 years. Who knows maybe L3afpad will be the successor of Leafpad, even no new releases after 1.5 years, but there are some activities on GitHub [4], so it's all good.

Q: Why no syntax highlight?
A: You do know you are using a "Notepad," right?
