Children with Down Syndrome have weak muscles. This is the reason they are not able to chew the food properly. Apart from that their teeth are also misaligned which also affects their chewing. The process of swallowing food after chewing also involves the nerves of the throat, and tongue. They are also weak in children with Down Syndrome.
One should not be worried if the child is not able to chew the food properly and after chewing is not able to swallow it. You can give crushed food to the child until the child learns to swallow but one should focus on giving nutritious food to the child.
