Double Dragon II: The Revenge is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up video game produced for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the end of 1989. It is the second Double Dragon game for the NES and was published in North America by Acclaim Entertainment, who took over publishing duties from Tradewest. The game shares its title with the 1988 arcade sequel to the original Double Dragon, using the same promotional artwork for its packaging and having a similar plot, but the content of the two games are otherwise drastically different. The NES version of Double Dragon II was directed by Hiroyuki Sekimoto (co-director of River City Ransom), with the arcade version's director Yoshihisa Kishimoto taking a supervisory role in the game's development.

Billy and Jimmy Lee had seen their fair share of battles. As masters of the legendary Sōsetsuken fighting style, they had taken down entire gangs, fought corrupt crime lords, and protected their city from chaos. But nothing could have prepared them for the day they lost the one person who mattered most—Marian.

She had always been their light in the darkness, the one who believed in them when the world called them nothing but street brawlers. But the Black Warriors, the gang they had fought and crushed once before, had returned with a vengeance. Their new leader, a ruthless figure known only as the Shadow Master, had orchestrated a brutal ambush. Marian was gunned down in cold blood—a message meant to break the Dragon brothers' spirits.

But instead of despair, the brothers felt only fury.
