Succeeding as a string player is hard because the level of competition is very high. Getting a very expensive violin, viola, or cello rarely makes a decisive difference. Becoming 2% better than the competition is nearly unattainable—and even then, it rarely matters. What matters is becoming meaningfully different.
But what is "meaning"? And "meaningful" to whom?
