Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is one of the oldest in India and is located in Tamil Nadu. Vedanthangal bird sanctuary gained recognition about 250 years ago since natives here noticed the large number birds which got attracted to a large number of several ponds
and lakes. Vedanthangal bird sanctuary was used for hunting, however after several protests
from farmers in the year 1798 this region got legal protection and was not used for hunting
since then. This area was recognised as a sanctuary in the year 1936 and was named as a
reserve by Madras Forest Act in 1962. This region became a wildlife Sanctuary in 1972 under
the wildlife Protection Act.
During the months of November and mid-March, Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is said to be home to a variety of birds. Vedanthangal bird sanctuary covers about 30 hectares and has the capacity to give shelter to about 75,000 birds.
A variety of Birds can be spotted in Vedanthangal bird sanctuary. Some of them are: Spoonbills, Asian openbills, coots, common moorhen, darter (snake bird), rhesus macaque, cormorants, large white pelicans, painted storks, sandpipers, pintails, grey herons, pond herons, egrets, white throated kingfisher and night herons are some birds can be spotted in Vedanthangal.
