On July 19, 2019, Bob from Deep Junk Garage announced the "Shop truck build off! The shot heard round the world." The goal of the build is for Diecast community involvement, support and channel exposure. This video will document my entry in the Shop Truck Challenge Build Off. My build is the 1956 Ford F-100 "Auto Clinic Body Shop" truck. This custom is based on the Hot Wheels 1979 release of the Hi-Tail Hauler. I could have picked a different '56 Ford casting for this build, but I wanted to challenge myself with some major body modifications.
The chrome plastic base was swapped with a diecast metal base from a 1974 release of the Hot Wheels redline Baja Bruiser. The modifications included removing the front and rear bumpers for a clean looking slammed body. The front end was smoothed with the fenders and the rear end was tubbed. The side "exhaust" pipes were ground away.
The rear fenders were not cast to the correct proportions. Hot Wheels had larger rear wheels than fronts, but they opened the fenders too much and shortened them in the back, giving this truck a "cartoon" look in my opinion. I decided to go with the same size real rider Goodyear tires, so I added axle tubes and epoxy putty to fill in the exhaust openings below the doors and extend the rear fenders.
I also decided to chop the top by a scale 4 inches. This proved to be very challenging, just like a real chopped top! Luckily the top of the cab is pretty square, so I was able to get everything lined up correctly. I thought about adding a rear window, but left the cab as-is which is closer to the replication of a delivery truck.
Since the original Hot Wheels version had plastic motorcycles in the back, I made a custom wooden floor for the bed by laminating popsicle sticks and .020 inch thick aluminum "rails". The wood was stained to give it a more authentic look. The interior was detailed by adding a steering wheel and column. The wheel is a reproduction redline HK plastic wheel and the column is aluminum tubing.
All the casting lines were removed from the body with a lot of filing, sanding and filling. Filling in the rear fenders proved to be the most challenging part of this build. I also added custom rear taillights by using bent Hot Wheels axle pieces mounted directly into the rear frame. The entire body was painted gloss black with several light coats of Testors 'Purple Fog' color shifting paint (Purple to Green).
