First time sewing the out-breast welt pocket through the canvas

There's about 3 ways to navigate the out breast welt pocket in the canvas. One is putting the outbreast in the forepart first, the second is cutting an opening in the canvas and sewing the pocket through just the cloth. This is just sewing the pocket into the canvas like a madman. It's not so bad, but my use of a smaller seam allowance didn't help me here.

I've heard doing it this way maintains the structure of the canvas where cutting the flap can basically damage the integrity. Placing the pocket just between the cloth and canvas can just cause aesthetic issues.
