Fishing feels tougher every year—more pressure, fewer quality bites, and big bass seem harder to find. But a brand new peer-reviewed study shows one simple habitat enhancement that dramatically increased the size of largemouth bass in a real reservoir. If you’ve ever wondered how to grow bigger bass in your lake, the results of this research might surprise you.
Researchers monitored two Illinois reservoirs for eight years and then dropped 1,500 trees into one of them, instantly multiplying shoreline cover more than 12-fold. The results? Bluegill reproduction tripled, and the proportion of quality-size bass (12 inches and up) doubled in just four years. Numbers didn’t spike, but the size structure of the bass population shifted in a big way. This suggests that adding woody cover can be one of the fastest, most effective ways to grow bigger bass—especially in nutrient-rich lakes that lack vegetation.
