In November 1899, the British Army marched north through the rocky veld of South Africa, desperate to break the Boer siege of Kimberley. What they found at the kopjes of Graspan was not a minor resistance — but a deadly fortress of stone, rifles, and perfect marksmanship. On this ridge, sailors and marines of the Royal Navy, men trained for the sea rather than the battlefield, were ordered to charge straight into one of the most brutal kill-zones of the entire Anglo-Boer War.
This is the full story of the Battle of Graspan — known to the men who survived it as “The Ridge of Death.”
A battle of courage, tragedy, tactical blunders, and the extraordinary bravery of a Naval Brigade thrust into a fight they were never prepared for.
The Battle of Graspan is often overshadowed by larger disasters like Modder River and Magersfontein, but its lessons were just as severe. It exposed the fatal weakness of Victorian battlefield tactics and proved, once again, that courage alone could not overcome entrenched rifle fire.
