If you’ve been following my blog, you’ve probably noticed that Muay Thai is rich in a variety of techniques, fighting approaches, and unique styles. One of the most striking and fearsome among them is the Muay Khao style. In Thai, khao means “knee,” so Muay Khao literally translates to “knee boxer,” if such a word exists. In this video, I’ll talk about how the Muay Khao style emerged, its philosophy and key features, how “knee” fighters train, how this style influenced the development of Muay Thai, and we’ll recall legendary champions of this school. At the end, we’ll take a look at the technique in the ring.
In the 20th century, Muay Thai, much like Western boxing, developed stylistic archetypes similar to “puncher,” “counter-puncher,” and others. We’ve already talked about the strikers of Muay Mat in a previous video — don’t forget to check it out. We’ll discuss Muay Femur with their complex and elegant technique next time. But today’s focus is on those who rely on clinching and devastating knees — that’s the Muay Khao style. This style began making a name for itself during the “Golden Era” of Muay Thai, the 1970s–1980s. At that time, there were often spectacular clashes between fighters from opposing schools.
