In this video we will understand , the term tort comes from the Latin word “tortum,” meaning twisted or wrong.
In legal terms, a tort is a civil wrong in which one person's wrongful act, negligence, or omission causes harm to another individual, and the law provides a remedy in the form of compensation.
A tort is not a crime (which is an offense against the state) and not a breach of contract (which arises from a broken agreement).
Instead, tort law protects individual rights, such as:
Personal safety
Reputation
Property
Whenever these rights are violated, and the violation results in legally recognized harm, a tort is said to occur.
The injured party (plaintiff) has the right to sue the wrongdoer (defendant) for damages.
