A live performance of Carl Nielsen's masterpiece from a recital given at Hereford on 9 June 2015, the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth.
Commotio, composed in 1931, was Nielsen's last work. Although written in a single continuous movement, the journey through the piece encompasses a wide range of moods and textures.
The work is built around two major-key fugues. Before the first fugue there is an expansive introduction; after the fugue's devastating climax a calm and extremely quiet central section provides repose. After the second fugue (written in 12/8 time) the music seems to become more fragmentary, as if suddenly unsure about its direction; finally, a reprise of the second fugue allows Nielsen to conclude the work in a mood of determined triumph.
