[Link in description] It's been a while since we've had a Wild Thing in the shop, so it's a nice treat to be able to do this video! It's also cool because while the Wild Things were made by Kanstul, and Kanstul has gone out of business, our friends down the street at BAC purchased all of the Kanstul tooling and can now service any Kanstul-made instruments.
This horn is in really great shape, and has that beautiful Flip Oakes Wild Thing bell logo. Flip designed these horns with Kanstul, and they have a huge bell flare. The valves are in great shape and have great compression. You'll hear a little extra noise from the metal guides, but they add to the presence and responsiveness of the trumpet.
Check it out here on our web store:
The Wild Thing has two main claims to fame: the .470 bore, and a large bell flare. A .470 bore is even larger than most large bore trumpets, closer to a marching bugle style bore size. The front brace is also really far forward, which helps give stability to the sound. The leadpipe is similar to a Bach 75 taper.
This horn comes with a huge hard shell case, which is in excellent condition. You can fit a lot of mutes in the accessories section. It also comes with two tuning slides; the number 1 is wide open, and the number two is a little more efficient. With the large bell taper I prefer the tighter tuning slide, but you may prefer the number 1 if you like to put a ton of air through the horn.
This horn is geared to the jazz soloist, but it has the versatility to play in many situations. I wouldn't hesitate to play this on a quintet gig, for example, or concert band/orchestral settings. It definitely shines for small group jazz playing, though. It also really lights up with a lead mouthpiece, and with the bore size you can really lean into the upper register notes.
