It's July 3, 2025, and we're in Montpelier, Vermont celebrating Independence Day. I asked some locals why they celebrate on July 3rd, but none of them knew the answer.
Montpelier may be the smallest state capital in the U.S., but don't let its size fool you. This charming town is brimming with beautiful architecture and one particularly stunning landmark: the Vermont State House.
The State House, which has been standing since 1859, is still a functioning government building. The lawn is the perfect spot for a picnic or simply to sit and admire the dome, which is topped with a statue of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture. It's especially breathtaking in the fall when the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold.
Unfortunately, their parade was cut short due to thunderstorms. Back in 2023, we were here celebrating, and just a few days after we left, Montpelier was submerged in floodwater. The inclement weather today led to the cancellation of the evening fireworks.
The quiet surrounding was a stark contrast to the bustling celebrations of 2023.
We stayed at the Capitol Plaza Hotel again this time.
Just three days before the flood of 2023, the hotel transitioned from the Bashara family to the Hilton. The combination of extensive flood damage and the fast-tracked upgrades has stretched the construction project to over eight months. Hilton invested over $22 million to acquire the hotel, repair the flood damage, and implement the upgrades.
