Hair Growth ▽ Follicle Cycle
Hair is a remarkable feature of the human body, constantly undergoing a natural cycle of growth and renewal. This cycle can be broken down into four key phases, each with its unique role:
Anagen Phase (Growth): This is when hair actively grows from its roots. This phase can last years, with hair growing a few millimetres each month.
Catagen Phase (Transition): Following the growth spurt, hair enters a brief transitional phase where it prepares to rest. This lasts for about two weeks.
Telogen Phase (Resting): For about three months, hair takes a break and stops growing but doesn't fall out.
Exogen Phase (Shedding): Old hair sheds naturally, allowing new hair to grow. This is a part of the normal hair cycle, so daily shedding is perfectly normal.
The hair growth cycle is influenced by genetics, hormones, and seasons, with hair typically growing faster in the summer. Nutrition plays a crucial role; a balanced diet helps maintain healthy hair growth.
As we age, our hair growth cycle changes. Hair may grow slower, and some hair follicles might stop producing new hair, leading to thinning.
Understanding this cycle is key to maintaining hair health and managing hair growth and loss expectations. It's a natural process indicative of the body's ongoing ability to regenerate and renew.
