The famous Shiva Panchakshara Stotram praises Shiva and the power of the five sacred syllables, na-ma-shi-va-ya and composed by the great saint
Sri Adi Shankarar.

nāgēndrahārāya trilōchanāya
bhasmāṅgarāgāya mahēśvarāya ।
nityāya śuddhāya digambarāya
tasmai "na" kārāya namaḥ śivāya ॥ 1 ॥

mandākinī salila chandana charchitāya
nandīśvara pramathanātha mahēśvarāya ।
mandāra mukhya bahupuṣpa supūjitāya
tasmai "ma" kārāya namaḥ śivāya ॥ 2 ॥

śivāya gaurī vadanābja bṛnda
sūryāya dakṣādhvara nāśakāya ।
śrī nīlakaṇṭhāya vṛṣabhadhvajāya
tasmai "śi" kārāya namaḥ śivāya ॥ 3 ॥

vaśiṣṭha kumbhōdbhava gautamārya
munīndra dēvārchita śēkharāya ।
chandrārka vaiśvānara lōchanāya
tasmai "va" kārāya namaḥ śivāya ॥ 4 ॥

yajña svarūpāya jaṭādharāya
pināka hastāya sanātanāya ।
divyāya dēvāya digambarāya
tasmai "ya" kārāya namaḥ śivāya ॥ 5 ॥

pañchākṣaramidaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭhēchChiva sannidhau ।
śivalōkamavāpnōti śivēna saha mōdatē ॥

நாகே³ன்த்³ரஹாராய த்ரிலோசனாய
ப⁴ஸ்மாங்க³ராகா³ய மஹேஶ்வராய ।
நித்யாய ஶுத்³தா⁴ய தி³க³ம்ப³ராய
தஸ்மை "ந" காராய நம: ஶிவாய ॥ 1 ॥

மன்தா³கினீ ஸலில சன்த³ன சர்சிதாய
நன்தீ³ஶ்வர ப்ரமத²னாத² மஹேஶ்வராய ।
மன்தா³ர முக்²ய ப³ஹுபுஷ்ப ஸுபூஜிதாய
தஸ்மை "ம" காராய நம: ஶிவாய ॥ 2 ॥

ஶிவாய கௌ³ரீ வத³னாப்³ஜ ப்³ருன்த³
ஸூர்யாய த³க்ஷாத்⁴வர நாஶகாய ।
ஶ்ரீ நீலகண்டா²ய வ்ருஷப⁴த்⁴வஜாய
தஸ்மை "ஶி" காராய நம: ஶிவாய ॥ 3 ॥

வஶிஷ்ட² கும்போ⁴த்³ப⁴வ கௌ³தமார்ய
முனீன்த்³ர தே³வார்சித ஶேக²ராய ।
சன்த்³ரார்க வைஶ்வானர லோசனாய
தஸ்மை "வ" காராய நம: ஶிவாய ॥ 4 ॥

யஜ்ஞ ஸ்வரூபாய ஜடாத⁴ராய
பினாக ஹஸ்தாய ஸனாதனாய ।
தி³வ்யாய தே³வாய தி³க³ம்ப³ராய
தஸ்மை "ய" காராய நம: ஶிவாய ॥ 5 ॥

பஞ்சாக்ஷரமித³ம் புண்யம் ய: படே²ச்சி²வ ஸன்னிதௌ⁴ ।
ஶிவலோகமவாப்னோதி ஶிவேன ஸஹ மோத³தே ॥

Meaning:

He who has the king of snakes as his garland and who has three eyes,
He whose body is smeared with sacred ashes and who is the great Lord,
He who is eternal, who is ever pure with the four directions as his clothes,
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable “na”

He who is worshipped with water from the Mandakini river and smeared with sandal paste,
He who is the lord of Nandi and of the ghosts and goblins, the great Lord,
He who is worshipped with Mandara and many other flowers,
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable “ma”

He who is auspicious and who is like the newly risen sun causing the lotus-face of Gauri to blossom,
He who is the destroyer of the sacrifice of Daksha,
He who has a blue throat and has a bull as his emblem,
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable “shi”

He who is worshipped by the best and most respected sages – Vasishtha, Agastya and Gautama, and also by the gods, and who is the crown of the universe,
He who has the moon, sun and fire as his three eyes,
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable “va”

He who is the embodiment of yagna (sacrifice) and who has matted locks,
He who has the trident in his hand and who is eternal,
He who is divine, who is the shining one and who has the four directions as his clothes,
Salutations to that Shiva, who is represented by the syllable “ya”

He who recites this Panchakshara near Shiva,
Will attain the abode of Shiva and enjoy bliss.
