In this video, I discuss “fitness dogmatism.” What do I mean by that? I mean the tendency people have to join a “tribe” when it comes to their fitness. Not only do they very often stick to their one modality while shunning all other forms of training; they might even disparage those training in other ways.

This attitude can affect anyone. Whether you’re a powerlifter, bodybuilder, or a runner. Even within modalities, you’ll find people become wed to a specific rep range or a particular set of exercises.

Often, they may feel they have good reason for this. Maybe they’ve seen great results from those methods. Maybe their favourite fitness influencer has shown them the scientific PROOF that this is the best way to build muscle.

Everything else just seems like noise or a waste of time.

Why would you mess around with functional training when powerlifting has been shown to best improve jump height? Why do cardio when you increase endurance through heavy lifting?

But, then again, a bodybuilder might ask why you would mess around with powerlifting when higher rep ranges and isolation exercises work so well for building muscle.

A yoga practitioner might think building big muscle just impedes movement…

They can’t all be right!

Well, they kind of are. That’s the point: because each method is best for different goals. Each method has something to offer as part of a well-rounded fitness diet.

And, in fact, we know so little about the human body, that it is pure folly to try and conclusively claim one method is superior to another.

If you don’t know how much you don’t know, you probably don’t know as much as you think you do!

This dogmatism comes from a lack of knowledge, as well as various ego defence mechanisms. People don’t want to admit that the training they’ve been doing might be lacking something. Even though ALL training lacks something!

The problem is that by being so dogmatic about training, you overlook your own shortcomings and you miss out on the huge possibilities available to you. You might even be unable to appreciate the unique skills and abilities of others.

All this to say: question your dogmas and be a little more open minded!
