I don't suffer with a substance abuse disorder atm but have a ounce of empathy for those that currently do. Even social media content is an escape too. A drug of sorts. A distraction from really addressing the root issues of your trauma.
Some foolishly wear their early childhood afflictions like some kind of badge of honor. It shapes the narrative to their life unknowingly if one carelessly allows it. All because we're the kind of species that's particularly obsessed with stories. Even the ones that we make up for ourselves. They turn into self-fulfilling prophecies.
X or Y event happened to me at an early age so that's why I see the world in the colors that I do.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that can occur in childhood, from ages 0–17. They can include violence, abuse, neglect, or aspects of a child's environment that can make them feel unsafe or unstable. ACEs can also include: Witnessing violence in the home or community, A family member attempting or dying by suicide, Parental abandonment, A household member in prison, and Alcohol and drug use problems in the household.
According to multiple studies, the number of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) a person has can increase their risk of developing a substance use disorder later in life.
An ACE score of four nearly doubles the risk of heart disease and lung cancer, with your likelihood of becoming an alcoholic increasing by 700%. Individuals with an ACE score of 5 or higher are seven to 10 times more likely to use illegal drugs and become addicted.
