Large, complex oil paintings don’t have to feel overwhelming. In this first part of a multi-part series, I show how I plan a complex oil painting, starting with concept, Photoshop reference preparation, and compositional decisions, then carrying that plan through the drawing, underpainting, and first layers of form.
This video focuses on structure and value, not finishing details—helping you avoid common mistakes that can stall complex paintings later on. You’ll see how I tone the canvas, establish early values, and build form gradually before introducing color.
In Part 2, I’ll continue refining values and begin adding local color.
Topics covered:
Oil painting planning · Photoshop reference prep · Drawing and underpainting · Early layers · Building form in oil paint
