Bamboo Bats—Want to Hit Boundaries AND Save Trees? Here is how to make a Cricket bat-start to finish

In this video I share how to make a Cricket bat in an entirely new way!

During my research I came across Bamboo as a great option for cricket bats. Bamboo belongs to the grass family. Thus at first glance it seems like it wouldn’t check all the boxes required of a good cricket bat. But, as I researched Bamboo I became even more captivated by its potential.

For me the following three reasons trumped all others:
1. Bamboo bats are stronger;
2. They transfer more energy to the ball; and
3. Bamboo grows as much as 3 feet in one day and thus offers greater sustainability.

If Bamboo could be as good as wood for cricket bats then it could improve the efficiency in the manufacturing process and reduce the use of wood. A Willow tree may take 15 years to grow as tall as Bamboo can in a few weeks. And where the Willow’s trunk offers a lot more mass and thus wood, it is simply a matter of growing ‘x’ number of Bamboo to match the quantity of wood. All this started to make too much sense.

Note that I am no authority on Bamboo nor do I know exactly what Bamboo requires as far as its growth is concerned and what quantity of Bamboo is required to manufacture each cricket bat.

So, naturally I decided to see whats what for myself and started the build.

My first challenge was not finding any Bamboo at the usual wood supply shops in Canada. I resorted to purchasing a desktop slab of solid Bamboo instead. By solid Bamboo I mean glued up already so that I may skip gluing up the bamboo strips. This is because I could see my glue up of those strips going sideways a million different ways!
