Kate Muir is women’s health expert, documentary maker, and author of books on the menopause and the pill.
In a talk held on 23 April 2024 at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge - one of just two higher education institutions for women in the UK - she warns that young women are increasingly turning to TikTok for contraceptive advice, and calls for more research and better information on contraception.
"We need to make our voices heard and ask for better – and more honest – medical information about hormonal contraception and side-effects, or else TikTok will continue to drown out doctors."
Kate's book, Everything You Need to Know About the Pill (but were too afraid to ask), is out in April 2024. Her earlier book, Everything You Need to Know About the Menopause (but were too afraid to ask), is out now in paperback. She pitched and produced a new documentary for Channel 4, Davina McCall’s Pill Revolution, investigating contraceptive choices in the UK and their impact on women's lives. This follows two award-winning menopause documentaries, Davina McCall: Sex, Myths and the Menopause and Davina McCall: Sex, Mind and the Menopause for Channel 4 current affairs.
The talk is followed by a panel discussion with Dr Madeline Lameris, Murray Edwards Fellow in Medicine and a GP and menopause specialist, and Dr Louise Newson @menopause_doctor , GP and menopause specialist. The panel is chaired by Murray Edwards College President Dorothy Byrne.
