The second case concerned Christopher Curtis Ray, who pled guilty to forgery of a financial instrument, a third-degree felony. Defense counsel highlighted Ray’s efforts toward rehabilitation, including earning a GED, completing the Safe-P program, and securing a job offer as an auto mechanic. He was also caring for his elderly mother. However, the prosecution emphasized Ray’s extensive criminal history of similar financial crimes and his ongoing probation and parole in other counties. Judge West agreed with the State, ruling that probation was inappropriate given his repeated offenses. She sentenced him to five years in the Texas Department of Corrections, reminding him of his legal restrictions on firearm possession and his right to appeal. Both cases underscored the court’s stance that actions, not promises, determine leniency.
