The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (RA) in Cairo is not an ordinary mosque — it is The first mosque built in Africa and a cornerstone of Islamic history. Constructed in 639 AD during the Caliphate of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA), this mosque marks the beginning of Islamic governance in Egypt.
Led by Hazrat Amr ibn al-As (RA), the Muslim campaign in Egypt was not merely a military conquest but a mission of justice, administration, and governance. The fall of Babylon Fortress, the conquest of Alexandria, and the establishment of a fair system for the Coptic Christians laid the foundation for future Islamic expansions — including the eventual path towards Andalus (Spain).
This mosque served not only as a place of worship but also as:
An administrative headquarters
A center for consultation and learning
A strategic military point
Later rebuilt and restored during the era of Salahuddin Ayyubi, the mosque stands today as a symbol of Islamic justice, vision, and strategic foresight.
Location: Old Cairo, Egypt
Historical Era: Rashidun & Umayyad periods
