Discovered by Parisian perfumers at the start of the 20th century, ylang-ylang has proven to be a lucrative crop for the islands of the Indian Ocean, to the point where its cultivation poses a serious threat to the last remaining forests there. To counter this, some have adopted a more sustainable approach to growing this highly prized “flower of flowers”, a valuable source of income for some of the world’s poorest nations.
