While preeclampsia is commonly associated with pregnancy, it’s important to know that it can also rarely develop after delivery, a condition known as postpartum preeclampsia. This can occur anytime within the first few days to several weeks after childbirth—even in women who had normal blood pressure during pregnancy.
Postpartum preeclampsia can be dangerous if not recognized early, potentially leading to seizures (eclampsia), stroke, or organ damage. Symptoms may include high blood pressure, headaches, visual disturbances, swelling, abdominal pain, or shortness of breath.
Because of this risk, monitoring blood pressure after delivery is crucial, especially in the first two weeks. Early detection and treatment can prevent serious complications and ensure a safer recovery for new mothers.
