🏰 Port Highlight: Greenock (Glasgow) – Gateway to Edinburgh
Our first port brings us to Greenock, the maritime gateway to Edinburgh, Scotland’s captivating capital city. From Greenock, we journey across the rolling Scottish countryside to begin a self-guided day of exploration filled with history, architecture, and charm.
Our first sight was the majestic Edinburgh Castle, perched high on Castle Rock, offering panoramic views of the city. Just a short stroll away, the dramatic spire of the Tolbooth Kirk (now The Hub) dominates the skyline—a striking example of Gothic architecture.
We wandered along Victoria Terrace, the curved, colorful street that inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films, before stepping into St. Giles’ Cathedral, the spiritual heart of the city since the 12th century. Inside, the intricate stained glass and stone carvings tell stories of Scotland’s turbulent past.
From there, we explored several of Edinburgh’s mysterious “closes”—the narrow alleyways branching off the Royal Mile, each steeped in local legends. For lunch, we visited Deacon Brodie’s Tavern, named after the real-life inspiration for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Traditional Scottish pies, smoked salmon, and locally brewed beer made for a perfect mid-day break before returning to Brilliance of the Seas.
🌊 What Made Days 1–3 Memorable
Sailing from England, relaxing through a sea day, and stepping into the storybook streets of Edinburgh — it’s a powerful start to our 16-day transatlantic voyage, blending serene ocean days with unforgettable history ashore.
