This video is Part 1 of 8 to release the potential WOW factor from Hornby’s Bassett-Lowke Steampunk Locomotives - Fearless (steam) & Rogue (diesel-jet hybrid). The trouble is, they being a rather plain black with silver wash livery, this required a full repaint in the more typical steampunk colour scheme of the Copper based metal colours of green verdigris, bronze, copper & brass.
The inspiration for this bronze & green paint scheme :

I purchased the two locos (of the three types made) for use on my Club (Chesham Model Railway Club – CMRC) Children’s self-drive layout. We needed some new stock for it & it has rather tight curves, so their 0-4-0 wheel arrangements should negotiate them with ease without derailments. Their heavy robust construction will help endure any rough handling the kids may give them.
They were cheap, being just over £30 each from two different vendors, keeping the Club Treasurer happy.
This video was recorded over many days showing the whole process in 4K high resolution. To make the video more viewable & with more manageable file sizes, it has been cut into eight parts :
PART 1 (this video) – Introduction, Preclean & Cab Windows
Part 2 - Bronze the Chassis & Body
Part 3 - The Wheels & Motion
Part 4 - Copper, Brass & Gunmetal - Pipes, Backhead & Leaf Springs
Part 5 - Buffer Beams prep & the Black Wipe-off Metallic Reveal Method
Part 6 - Verdigris Green Body, Red Buffer Beams, Leather Bonnet & Paint Dot Lamp Method
Part 7 - Strange Transparent Green Lacquer - Bonnet, Jet Engines & Cab Glazing
Part 8 - Reassembly, a look around the final results, plus Layout running
Starring :
• Bassett-Lowke (Hornby) – BL2002 - Steampunk 0-4-0 Steam Loco Fearless.
• Bassett-Lowke (Hornby) – BL2003 - Steampunk 0-4-0 Diesel Loco Rogue.
Recommended Paints & Materials :
• Paint Primer – I used the excellent but no longer legally available aerospace Acid Etching Paint Primer to BS X 32. A 2-pack chromate rich thin wash paint made by the Indestructible Paint Co.
However, via Hornby Magazine (Issue 190, page 38, stage 4), there is a Badger primer suitable for metal & fine details. It’s called Stynylrez, a Grey water based Acrylic Polyurethane. Designed for airbrushes, but I’m sure it can be applied by brush.
• Humbrol - Enamel – 11 metallic Silver – for mixing with the 149 green to make copper verdigris.
• Humbrol – Enamel – 20 gloss Scarlet; 33 matt Black; 34 matt White; 53 metallic Gunmetal.
• Humbrol – Enamel – 54 metallic Brass – bodies & chassis. Apparently 55 is the Bronze I should have been using, so explaining the odd old gold appearance !
• Humbrol – Enamel – 60 matt Scarlett; 62 matt Leather; 71 satin Oak; 131 satin Mid Green.
• Humbrol – Enamel – 149 matt Dark Green – base colour for the copper verdigris.
• Humbrol – Lacquer – 1325 Clear Green – cellulose transparent coloured clearcoat, originally made for colouring glass & clear plastic. Used as a wash on the bonnet, jet engine covers & diesel cab window glazing. No longer made, but Tamiya X-25 Clear Green may work as an available alternative.
• Alclad II – Lacquer – ALC-109 Polished Brass; ALC-110 Copper.
• Oil & Grease of your choice - for reassembly service.
