If your Exmark Vantage S stand-on mower with a Kawasaki FS541V engine is popping, running rough, losing power under load, or misfiring—this video walks you through the full diagnostic and repair process to track down and repair the problem.

We go step-by-step through:

How to test spark on each cylinder

How to identify weak or intermittent spark

How to verify each cylinder is firing independently

Fuel system checks for flow, quality and pressure

Carburetor inspection and choke behavior

How to use a multimeter to test an ignition coil (and why this test is often unreliable)

How to inspect for a blown head gasket on this Kawasaki FS series engine

How to properly install and gap a new ignition coil

How to clean the flywheel magnet and coil mount for best performance

This issue turned out to be a bad ignition coil, which caused weak spark and poor engine performance.

This is hard to see sometimes with a visual inspection but if you compare each side it is easier to gauge if this is the issue.

After replacing it and cleaning everything up, the FS541V engine runs strong again.

This applies to many other mowers and equipment using Kawasaki FS, FR, and FX series engines, including Toro, Gravely, Scag, Hustler, Ferris, Cub Cadet, Bad Boy and John Deere.
