If you are considering converting a railroad flat car into a bridge then this video will be very interesting to you. We have been converting flatcars into bridge since 1999 and this is how we start the structural engineering process...
In this video, I discuss the systematic process of measuring a railroad flat car. Steps include:
1) General information gathering.
2) Center sill bottom flange & web.
3) Body bolster flange & web.
4) End sill.
5) Transverse crossmembers.
6) Longitudinal crossmembers.
7) Side sills.
Without my system a newbie should expect to take about 8 hours to measure a bridge. With my process, a newbie should be able to do it in about 3 hours. An experienced person can do it in about 1.5 hours. Yes, its dirty and challenging.
After watching this video, you should be able to see all the elements of a railroad flat car. Box cars are also built very similar.
This is an updated video as the previous video had some buffering/lag problems.
YES...we can model YOUR railcar if you send us the measurements!
