One of my other hobbies is playing chess. I always wanted to make a chess set with my own hands, and I finally did it over the last winter. I saw a minimalist design on the web, that inspired me, so I made my own.
Each piece is done individually (not as commercial sets which are done with special cutter/forms in series), each piece is turned in the lathe, and polished and finished individually. For that reason, they are all a little bit different, but follow the same standard as much as possible.
The follow the FIDE recommended relative sizes, and the board was done to respect those sizes. Each piece contains a tungsten insert (which is almost twice as heavy as lead, and not poisonous!!!) and finished with danish oil. The base is dressed with thin felt fabric.
The dark pieces are done in walnut, and the clear pieces in maple. The board is also done with maple and walnut.
