Arahabaki Shrine
Sagami Province
Guardian deity of the barrier
A forbidden shrine sealed away by the powerful of the time
The only surviving shrine in Sagami Province
He is a mysterious deity who does not appear in the Kojiki and Nihon shoki myths or traditional folk tales, and there are various theories about him, but he is written as "Arahabaki," "Arahabaki," "Arahabaki," "Arahabaki," etc., and even today he is quietly enshrined in shrines all over the country. However, in many cases he is enshrined as a guest deity (monkyaku deity). This is because it is said that "he was originally the chief deity, but became a guest deity (marebito, marodo) in a reversal of roles."
At shrines, he has been regarded as the deity of the "habaki," which is worn on the legs, or as the "god of the feet." (The deity "Okyakusan" of Arahabaki Shrine in Tagajo City has been given leg warmers and other offerings by travelers, but is also said to heal the lower body in general, and phallic statues are also offered to him.
Since the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period, the deities of each shrine have been changed to be identified with gods from the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki myths, but in the case of Arahabaki, due to the inclusion of the character "shin" (shank), he is sometimes considered to be "Nagasunehiko," who was on the side defeated by the Yamato dynasty (Emperor Jimmu).
The ancient history and legend "Tounichiryu Gaisangunshi" has had a strong influence, and the theory that Arahabaki is a "Jomon god" and an "Ezo god" has become firmly established. It has also become widely known as the image of a sunshade clay figurine.
