In our 13th literature talk "TemuSastra" we introduced the Indonesian author Eka Kurniawan and his two German translators, Martina Heinschke and Sabine Müller.
46 years old Eka Kurniawan is one of the internationally most recognized Indonesian writers. He published four novels, several short story collections, articles and screen plays. In Indonesia, he is also well known for his own political column in the daily newspaper Jawa Pos. So far Eka is the only Indonesian author who was nominated for the famous British Booker Prize for his novel Lelaki Harimau in 2018.
Among other topics, our guests discussed about Eka Kurniawan’s first two novels which have been translated into German: Cantik itu Luka, by Sabine Müller (“Schönheit ist eine Wunde”), and Lelaki Harimau, by Martina Heinschke (“Tigermann”).
The three friends traced the development that Eka Kurniawan has gone through since these two novels were published. Eka Kurniawans style, his preferred topics and his magical realism were highlighted but also the challenges of literary translating in common.
