Accidentally caught an emergency stop and train race on camera and thought I would share it.
I was on a Swiss built Stadler FLIRT

The performance of both was impressive although I think unsurprisingly the Stadler FLIRT won due to higher power-to-weight ratios, lower air resistance and a more aggressive driver.
The emergency stop of the Stadler required the dissipation of 52 kWh in around 20 seconds, which equates to 9 megawatts. Although some of this will have been returned to the catenary via regenerative breaking, most will have been thrown away as heat through the disc brakes. I am not sure why we stopped but it happens a lot on this stretch.
Filmed between Duisburg and Dusseldorf, Germany. Maximum track speed is 200kph but this is only attained by ICE/THALYS trains with LZB signalling. Regional trains travel at a maximum of 160kph.
