Nightmares (along with nightmare disorder) and sleep terrors (also known as night terrors) are relatively common occurrences that typically affect young children. Nightmares and sleep terrors differ in several important ways, including the stage of sleep that is affected, the particular attributes of the dream/sleep imagery and the associated affects. In this lesson, we discuss the similarities and differences between nightmares and sleep terrors, including how nightmare disorder and sleep terrors are diagnosed and treated.
