The day I flirted with a "dirt nap": A wingsuit near-miss in the Dolomites
This jump in the heart of the Italian Dolomites wasn't just another tick on my wingsuit checklist.
It was a gut-wrenching reality check, a wake-up call scrawled across the sky in sweat and fear.
You see, this wasn't supposed to be a close shave with the rocks. We'd scouted it on YouTube, Oliver (aka @thrustmastermiller, my partner in sky-crime) and I, both convinced it was well within our grasp.
My usual paranoia-prevention technique? Walk the damn thing. Every inch. Eyes peeled for hidden rock monsters and terrain surprises. But at 0:41 in the video, there it hides, a mischievous little gremlin in the form of a flat spot beyond the first ledge.
My rookie reflexes barely skimmed the dip on the next ledge. Stuck in a crack, the edge whispering about my questionable life choices, I knew I'd danced way too close to a permanent vacation.
This wasn't just a near-miss. It was a full-blown reality check.
Respect the damn terrain, stick to the plan, know your limits – my mantra, rewritten in sweat and fear.
The action I took? Dialing back 30% on every future jump. Epic flights are one thing, but trading them for a dirt nap isn't my masterpiece.
Watching folks play the "ground-is-lava" game makes me a little jealous, not gonna lie. But this brush with a potential dirt nap opened a whole new gallery of adventure.
I share this vulnerable mistake in hopes that it helps one of my friends not make the same mistake I did. Remember, the mountains demand respect and humility. Let's keep chasing thrills, but let's chase them smartly, together.
