In this jazz guitar lesson, we explore three chord melody lines from George Van Eps taken from his classic book George Van Eps Chord Solos. Each example is built over a ii–V progression and demonstrates Van Eps’ signature piano-like style — sustaining voices while moving inner and upper lines. This contrapuntal approach is one of the most powerful ways to make your chord solos sound rich, sophisticated, and orchestral.
I’ll break down the theory behind each line, as well as show you how to practice them on guitar. If you want to sound more like a pianist on the guitar — with moving voices, smooth voice leading, and a true George Van Eps flavor — this lesson is for you.
