സ്ത്രീകൾ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ഏക തെയ്യമാണ്‌ ദേവക്കൂത്ത്. കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലയിലെ പഴയങ്ങാടിക്കടുത്തുള്ള തെക്കുമ്പാട് കൂലോം തായക്കാവിലാണ്‌ ഈ സ്ത്രീ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്. രണ്ടു വർഷത്തിലൊരിക്കലാണ്‌ ദേവക്കൂത്ത് കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്.

തെക്കുമ്പാട് ദ്വീപിലെ പൂന്തോട്ടത്തിൽ എത്തിയ ഒരു അപ്സരസ്ത്രീ അവിടെ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടു പോകുകയും പിന്നീട് നാരദന്റെ സഹായത്തോടെ അവർ ദേവലോകത്തേക്ക് പോയി എന്നുമാണ്‌ ഐതിഹ്യം. ഇതിന്റെ തുടർച്ചയെന്നോണമാണ്‌ സ്ത്രീകൾ തന്നെ ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്

Thekkumbadu Koolom Thazhekkavu Bhagavathy Temple Kannur

A group of “Apsaras” ( beautiful, supernatural female beings) elegant, and superb in the art of dancing , came down from heaven to collect rare flowers from earth. After long searching they could not find the flowers they needed. Finally, their sight caught a uncanny small island i.e. ‘Thekkumbad’ island place near to ‘Maatol’ in ‘Pazhayangady’ presently . Abundant and rampant with multifarious flowers and trees. All went to collect flowers in different sides . All collected the flowers they needed and gathered together. But one girl became isolated and caught inside the island like a troglodyte in a moribund . Her maids searched for her in the entire island but all their efforts were in debacle. They depart to heaven with deep sorrow. Girl felt morass and implored the help of ‘Devas’ . Finally, like a mascot ‘Naradan’ reached there to take back her. Further they crossed ‘Thekkumbad’ river in a wooden trough and reached ‘Valluvan Kadavu’ to move to heaven. This incident triggered the ‘Devakoothu Theyyam’ performance . Here the Girl ( ‘Apsaras’ ) were conceived as ‘Devakoothu’ or lady Theyyam and ‘Naradan ‘also enters the stage accompanied as a lieutenant for Devakoothu with appropriate make up and demeanor.

Especially in North Malabar region .Women enjoyed upper rights in this egalitarian system and treated well."Amma Pooja" the divine concept has following in all the temples ( shaktism) .The pure and uncovered ritual practice for appeasing the mother goddess .During the Vedic period onward Hindu women were honoured and gave due respect in the society. Their role in moulding and upliftment of the civilization were remarkable. The same we can seen in many Theyyam stories. Majority of Theyyams were conducted as a rededication to mother goddess . Sthree Theyyam gains resurgence here . Being a male dominated society we can see a big space which is entirely reserved for females in this colorful festival. The adherence of the same in the daily life is also stunning where it enlighten the ethos of cultural and social aspect of every north Malabar citizens, Especially in Kannur District.
