Blueby is back! Well, it never really left, but for the last few years this 1998 Volkswagen Golf MK3 has been used more as a UTV than a car. I left it up in northern Maine to play in the woods with no doors, hatch, or bumpers. It crawled around the muddy and rocky trails for a few years until this past summer, when I decided to put it back together for SCCA Rallycross. Now the Golf has come full circle, back to a completely street legal car fit for racing in bumpy fields. In early November we took it out to Plymouth, New Hampshire for a race at a tree farm. The course was rough, but Blueby held its own until a catastrophic heater core crack caused us to loose all of our coolant. With some quick repairs I was able to finish all my runs for the day, but unfortunately my friend Ben missed out and ended with a DNF since he wasn't able to run the last two "stages". But what do you want for a $300 car??
I haven't spent more than $1800 total on this car, even after owning it for five years. The original purchase price was $300. This car truly has battled the harshest of environments while keeping itself together using old factory VW parts found in a junkyard.
