In the woods beyond the bare late winter branches, a hungry female pileated woodpecker is looking for insects on a fallen log. She becomes aware of her mate, a large male, in the treetops above. She abandons breakfast and puts herself in position for love. He flies down to her. He's frightened and reluctant, looking above for the dangers of hawks and eagles, but can not resist her. Quickly, it's over. It was a difficult video to shoot, as the branches got in the way and the camera went in and out of focus, but this is a behavior you've likely not seen before. Please enjoy, even if it's only for a short time.
