Rare Glossy Ibis Flocks to the UK in Record Numbers

September 2025 saw record numbers of Glossy Ibises visiting the UK. Several hundred birds were recorded, including a single flock of more than 90 individuals.
It's believed that droughts in southern Europe have pushed the birds further north. For context, in the 1990s, just one or two Glossy Ibises were recorded visiting the UK.
The Glossy Ibis population is growing steadily across Europe. This, combined with milder winters here, has led to more birds choosing to overwinter in the UK.
Although still considered rare visitors, it's likely that Glossy Ibises will become a more common sight in the UK in years to come.
A major milestone was reached in 2022, when the species bred successfully in the UK for the first time.
