Can you track your dog with a microchip? No, not really. But it sounds like something crazy that would be possible to do! Watch this video and see how it's done!
Learn about the differences between a microchip and a dog tracker here: https://dogadvisorycouncil.com/can-yo...
Microchips are typically about the size of a grain of rice. When inserted into an animal, it can be scanned with a microchip scanner to reveal information stored within the chip.
This can help you get your pet back if it's lost by revealing all kinds of information like the name, phone number, and address of the owner! The information can also help you to find out how the chip was put into your pet and who did it, as not all shelters or vets do this.
If you want to try to use the microchip like a GPS tracker, though, forget about it. The microchip can't be tracked along with your pet as they move around because of the way it works.
A microchip uses RFID technology, which means it sends out an electromagnetic signal in to the surrounding area. This signal is picked up by the scanner, which reads the chip's information and displays it on a screen or printout.
However, when you move away from the area where there are chip readers, your pet's chip is not sending out any signal.
This means that you cannot track your pet by moving to where you can get a signal and following the direction from which it is coming.
It also won't work over long distances, so if your pet runs away across state lines, it's probably pointless to think about trying to track them down this way.
