What is Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT)? In this video, Dr. Deva Boone, parathyroid surgeon at the Southwest Parathyroid Center, explains the basics of this common parathyroid disorder.
Primary hyperparathyroidism happens when one or more of the parathyroid glands becomes overactive, usually because of a benign tumor (parathyroid adenoma). This causes high blood calcium levels, which can lead to a wide range of symptoms and complications if left untreated.
What you’ll learn in this video:
What primary hyperparathyroidism is
How it’s diagnosed (high calcium and abnormal PTH levels)
Why “normal” PTH levels can still be inappropriate
Common symptoms (fatigue, brain fog, insomnia, kidney stones, bone loss, and more)
Health risks of untreated parathyroid disease
Even mildly high calcium can cause serious symptoms over time. The good news: removing the abnormal parathyroid gland usually fixes the problem and helps patients feel better.
