While European antisemitism influenced Arab nationalist politics, it was not its source. As Arab nationalism took shape, some strands of the movement saw Jewish nationalism as a threat to Arab independence. With the creation of the Arab League in 1945, implacable opposition to Jewish self-determination had become a central political position.
John Strawson, emeritus professor in the Law faculty at the East London University, will examine how antisemitism entrenched itself in the very roots of Arab nationalism. This explains why a resolution to conflict in the Middle East is so difficult today.
John Strawson has held a visiting position at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands, and has been visiting professor at Birzeit University, Palestine and at the International Islamic University Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
