Deconstructing Golden Slumber/Carry That Weight - The Beatles (Isolated Tracks)

Since they were recorded together I decided to do both at the same time. The basic track for both were recorded back to back on July 2nd, 1969. John was absent as he was recovering from a car accident. There were 15 takes of the basic track with Paul on piano, Ringo on drums, and George on a Fender Jazz VI bass. The following day two take take 13 and take 15 were edited together to create a full tack to work with. Further overdubs this day included extra drum hits, guitars, lead vocals for Carry That Weight. It wasn't until July 30th that Paul come back to Golden Slumbers to record a new lead vocal. The next day on July 31st George recorded his guitar solo onto Carry That Weight along with Ringo or Paul recording the timpani hits. The last orchestra overdub was performed on August 15th.

The full length Carry That Weight as originally thought of would've told to story of a person blowing small problems out of proportion. Paul saying during the Get Back sessions, "It's like a story. A bit like 'Act Naturally,' where a tag line keeps coming up, you know, 'so and so and so and so,' but all he said was 'act naturally." At this point Paul. However in the end the song was boiled down to the Carry That Weight chorus with a reprise of You Never Give Me Your Money weaved in.

Golden Slumbers was based on a old English lullaby with the lyrics,

"Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise,
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby,
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you,
You are care, and care must keep you,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.”
