Drama is a town in Macedonia, Greece, known in ancient times as Dyrama or Hydrama, meaning "rich in water." The town is home to the Agia Varvara springs, an ecologically significant wetland. Historically, the water from these springs was used by tobacco processing factories, including the Spierer tobacco house, built in 1924, now the Hydrama Grand Hotel.
While Drama once thrived on tobacco, it is now more famous for its wines.
Tobacco was introduced to Greece in the 16th century, with the Drama region growing Oriental Tobacco, especially the Basma and Katerini varieties. From 1914-1924, Drama’s tobacco industry boomed, with processed tobacco being exported worldwide.
Today, Drama is a vibrant town with bars, restaurants, and a laid-back atmosphere.
Drama is the home Sary, and their famed pastirma, a type of air-dried meat that has its roots in ancient Anatolia (Turkey - Türkiye).
