The system shown consists of a programmable desktop calculator (Wang 720C, circa 1972) controlling a custom 1971 IBM Selectric I typewriter to play a horse race game.
The game software (Wang Tewksbury Stakes) was written in 1971 and I was fortunate to get it on a cassette tape in working order. One can select 2-10 horses for a race of 4 stages. The winning horse number is reported after each stage. Also, the winning horse and ranking are reported at the end of the race.
The typewriter was made by IBM for the Wang computer company and sold for $1,800 under the product name Wang 701 Output Writer. The calculator itself sold for $7000 back then. Only government, corporations, and universities could afford this expensive system (the equivalent of $53,000 in 2019 money value).
To my knowledge, this is the first (and only?) WORKING hardware/software setup in existence.
I had the typewriter for over 10 years but could only perform this demo today (Feb, 2019) after I got lucky getting hold of an ex-IBMer master expert (a gentleman by the name Chuck Furrer out of Chicago) who did a complete overhaul and conditioning of the mechanical mechanism of the typewriter.
Enjoy!
