When she scooped top award in the Contemporary Music category during 'Safaricom Star Search 2002' event, singer Barbara Guantai's lifetime dream had come true. And now nearly a decade later, music has gradually become an integral aspect of her life. Currently, Barbara is rated among Kenya's veterans in the world of afro-fusion music.
The singer's status has become evident every time she performs at concerts, wherein she is known to render engaging performances. Her typical repertoire is a cross-breed of sorts, blending original traditional African compositions with either a touch of zouk, reggae, jazz and afro-fusion elements. She displays an artistic maturity and captivating stage presence, all these indicators that she is in her element as an expressive singer, guitarist and performer.
In 2003 Barbara released her debut 12-track CD Mbiu Ya Africa (Cry of Africa). Over the past two year, she has been working on songs for her second album, which is still a work in progress. She draws parallels between Mbiu ya Africa and the forthcoming album.
