This simple animated explainer video by Idle Bees throws light on what a geographical indication (G.I) is, for easy understanding.
A G.I is a sign that is often used on products from a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
It helps one to understand the concept and hard work and care that goes when one buys world famous G.I protected products like Roquefort “blue” cheese or Darjeeling tea from India.
Technically, Article 22.1 of the TRIPS Agreement defines G.I as a "good as originating in the territory of a member [of the World Trade Organization], or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin".
