I live in Mahlathini Private Game Reserve which borders the Kruger National Park. This particular late afternoon, I was standing in my kitchen when I heard an unfamiliar grunt, and when I turned around, I saw an African Wild Dog speeding along the house fence. I grabbed my iPhone and ran outside, just in time to see two wild dogs catching a young impala ram.
Two more wild dogs arrived, and the frenzy of ripping the impala apart and devouring what they can, began. Wild dogs eat their prey whilst still alive. It is quite intense to watch!
Hyenas often follow a pack of wild dogs when on the hunt, as their success rate is very high and this gives the hyena an opportunity to steal the prey. This is exactly what happened here. But just when the hyena thought that they had managed to take the impala from the four wild dogs, more wild dogs arrived (about 20 of them!) and even more hyenas, and a loud, hectic fight - a war, a fight - started, which lasted about 15 minutes.
The African Wild Dog is an endangered specie and to observe them from my own house's veranda, was unbelievable.
Come and see what it is like to live in the African bush on a daily basis. Everyday bush living is so exciting and pure bliss!
A necessity when in the bush, is a pair of binoculars. I have found that Nikon binoculars are an excellent choice: https://amzn.to/3rUdcaY
I used my iPhone 11Pro for the video. It is always at hand, lightweight, and takes 4K videos!
